# The Verdant Relic

There are gemstones that are cut for perfection.

And there are gemstones that tell stories.

This one tells two.

At the top rests a rare Hiddenite, glowing with shifting shades of green that change with light and environment. Suspended below is a hand-cut specimen Tanzanite, its vivid violet-blue depths revealing the natural character and internal world of the crystal from which it came.

Rather than transforming the Tanzanite into a conventional faceted gemstone, I removed only enough material to allow it to be securely set. Most of the crystal's natural faces remain intact, preserving the geological character of the original specimen while making it wearable.

Rather than hiding these gemstones behind conventional settings, I designed this pendant to celebrate their individuality. The open architecture allows light to pass freely through each stone while the sculptural 18k gold framework creates the feeling of an artifact discovered rather than manufactured.

Many people who have seen this piece have described it as looking ancient, as though it had been unearthed from a forgotten place and carried forward through time. That reaction wasn't planned, but once I heard it, I understood exactly what they meant.

Every curve, setting element, and connection point was designed specifically for these two gemstones. Nothing about this piece was adapted from an existing design. It exists because of these stones and could not have been made any other way.

The pendant measures approximately 50mm tall by 30mm wide, giving it a strong presence while maintaining an open, airy structure that allows light to move freely throughout the design.

The Tanzanite was cut by hand. The pendant was designed, finished, and assembled by me in Oregon.

## Artist's Note

This pendant pushed my abilities as a designer farther than any piece I had created before it. It taught me new approaches to stone setting, articulation, structure, and balance. Because of that, it marks an important milestone in my development as an independent artist.

When I look at it now, I can see lessons from every piece that came before it and hints of the work that will follow.

There will only ever be one.
