This ring began as a natural Montana sapphire crystal that I hand cut using my signature portal cut. Instead of transforming the crystal into a traditional faceted gemstone, the portal cut preserves the crystal's natural outline while creating a polished lens that reveals the remarkable landscape hidden inside.
Rather than designing a standard setting and making the stone fit it, I built the ring around the sapphire's natural shape. The flowing rim rises and falls with the height of the crystal while four sculpted prongs secure it with a light, organic touch. Along the shoulders, an open lattice tapers from 3 mm to 2 mm, giving the ring both strength and elegance.
Every stage of this piece, from cutting the sapphire to designing, finishing, and setting it, was completed by hand in my Oregon studio.
