This sapphire has a wonderfully moody, almost ancient feeling to it.

I cut the natural sapphire to preserve its irregular shape, inclusions and internal character rather than trying to turn it into a conventional gemstone. At approximately 11mm across, it has a substantial presence, with a translucent smoky blue-gray appearance and an internal landscape that changes as light moves through the stone.

I designed the sterling silver setting specifically around this individual sapphire. An open organic lattice extends through the shoulders of the ring and echoes the irregular character of the stone.

I gave this piece a tumbled finish, rather than polishing every surface to a perfectly uniform mirror finish. That leaves an intentionally varied surface, with brighter polished areas alongside softer texture. It gives the silver a slightly weathered quality that I think works especially well with this sapphire.

Each stone gets a say in what I do. This one seemed better suited to something a little wild.
