The Rosethorn Relic
Natural Pink Montana Sapphires in Solid 14k Rose Gold

Five natural Montana sapphires, each with its own color, character, and history, nestled together within an intricate tangle of solid 14k rose gold.

I call this piece The Rosethorn Relic.

These sapphires have been part of my gemstone collection for many years. I cut each one individually, preserving their unusual shapes, natural inclusions, and the fascinating internal landscapes that make them so different from conventionally cut gemstones.

Together, they weigh approximately six carats and display a beautiful range of pink, lavender, violet, and warmer earthy tones.

Pink is one of the less commonly encountered colors of Montana sapphire, and I wanted to create something that celebrated these five stones without asking them to surrender any of their individuality.

The setting was designed around the exact shape and orientation of each gemstone. Rather than arranging them on a flat surface, I angled them slightly outward from the center, allowing them to form a natural-looking cluster.

An intricate lattice of rose gold twists and flows around the stones, with delicate branches and tiny golden details emerging throughout the structure. The effect reminds me of ancient roots or thorny vines that have grown around something precious.

Even the back was carefully sculpted, with a recessed surface and individual openings behind the gemstones to reduce unnecessary weight while preserving the strength of the design.

This is the most complex piece of jewelry I've created to date. Bringing it to life required an entirely new approach to my design process, followed by some of the most challenging metal finishing and gemstone setting I've undertaken.

I'm especially pleased with how naturally everything came together.

The Rosethorn Relic feels like something that might have been discovered rather than made, a little treasure from another time.

And there will never be another exactly like it.

A Little About Montana Sapphires

Montana sapphires are known for their remarkable diversity of natural colors. While blue, green, and teal are more commonly associated with these American gemstones, pink and violet material is particularly special.

These five sapphires retain the inclusions, subtle color variations, and irregular shapes that tell the story of their natural formation.

I believe some of the most beautiful things nature creates are also the most wonderfully imperfect.

The Rosethorn Relic is my celebration of that beauty.
