A deep blue Montana sapphire with an entire hidden landscape beneath its polished surface.

This is one of the most successful portal cuts I have completed. Shaping and polishing the rounded surface is a slow, entirely hand-guided process, but the result allows the sapphire’s internal landscape to open through the stone like a lens. The softly rounded surface acts almost like a lens, drawing light into shifting layers of blue, teal, and shadow.

The setting was individually designed around the sapphire rather than forcing it into a conventional shape. Sculptural prongs follow its natural outline, while the open organic lattice continues into the shoulders of the band. Brightly polished edges contrast with the deeper texture of the white gold, giving the ring an old-world, almost unearthed quality.

I cut the stone, designed the setting, and completed the finish work in my Oregon studio. This is a one-of-a-kind ring and the exact piece shown in the photographs.

The sapphire contains natural inclusions and internal textures. I do not see these as flaws, but as part of the stone’s identity and the tiny world held within it.
