Sterling Silver Crescent Moon Earrings with 7mm Japanese Akoya Pearls

A pair of sculptural crescent moons surrounding luminous Japanese Akoya pearls.

I created these earrings around the contrast between the rugged surface of the moon and the smooth, reflective luster of a pearl. Each sterling silver crescent has a deeply textured lunar surface, while the exposed rim is individually burnished and polished so that the tiny high points catch and sparkle in the light.

Suspended within each moon is an approximately 7mm Japanese Akoya cultured pearl. The pearls move independently from the silver crescents, allowing both the pearl and the textured metal to continually catch changing light as the earrings move.

These are an earlier version of a design that I have continued to develop, and I particularly love the organic character of this pair. Rather than being perfectly identical, the two moons have the subtle individuality that comes from their textured surfaces and my hand finishing.

The silver moons begin as my original digital design and are professionally cast for me in sterling silver. I personally perform the finishing, burnishing, polishing and final assembly in my studio.

The result is a pair that changes considerably with the light. From a distance they read as bright silver crescents and pearls; viewed closely, the cratered surfaces and individually polished edges reveal considerably more detail.

These are substantial statement earrings, but the open crescent construction keeps their appearance airy on the ear.
